The population of Americans over 65 will grow from 34 million to 53 million by 2020, according to Census Bureau forecasts. The older than 85 population will nearly double to seven million.
First Church is challenged to meet the needs of society’s changing demographics, and to develop a sensitivity to the special needs of the elderly through it’s ministry programs and vision for future programs. Senior Adult Programs are open to all in the community.
Senior Moments
This column features information and stories for mid-age and older adults, from Candie Whitney, our Congregational Care Associate.
The Senior Friendship Club
The club is in its fourth decade of ministry. SFC is an enthusiastic group of seniors (age 60 and up) from various denominations throughout the Orlando area. The group gathers each Friday from 9:30 p.m. to noon for a morning of fellowship, programs, inspiration, fun and food. Bus trips are taken throughout the year to restaurants and other local places. The church minibus travels to and from the downtown retirement high-rises to pick up participants who wish to attend.
Seniors JOY
The mission of JOY (Just Older Youth) Friends is to bring together folks in our church family who enjoy being with others and to involve our boomer seniors who want to be a part of a small group in our church. It’s also a great way to meet new friends.
The JOY Friends gather for an activity in our community or at church. Programs include plays at local theaters, dinner parties, games nights, movie and dessert, and possibly even longer trips to distant areas for fellowship and enjoyment. Suggested activities from the group are always welcomed.
Listen In His Name
Listen In His Name is a Conference Sunday School Class for folks who are homebound and not able to attend worship or a Sunday School Class. Participants are called at 8:50 a.m. each Sunday and connected to the conference for a time of prayer and a meditation, which ends by 9:30 a.m. All are welcome to join. There is no cost to the participants and speakerphones can be provided upon request.
Sunday School options are available for those who wish to study with people in the same age-range or for those folks who prefer an intergenerational class. Visit our adult page by clicking here to view the Sunday school class options.
Spiritual Enrichments Groups
Spiritual Enrichment Groups are available to women living in the downtown towers. Additional information on the dates and times of these monthly group studies is found in the Senior Scoop Newsletter.
