Moving Beyond Summer
With the return of our final two mission trips, it’s time to look beyond the summer and focus on the new school year. As I mentioned in the Mid-Summer Update, 2018-2019 will bring a number of evolutions to Youth Ministry. These are exciting, new directions that honor the rich foundations of our ministry while adapting to new cultures and opportunities. I’m incredibly excited about what is to come and would like to share a few more of these evolutions with you.
This year, the school year kicks off with Meet the Youth Group Night. On August 12, youth and parents are invited to join us at 5:30 Worship and to stay for a short Third Floor Open House. Meet the adult team. Play some games. Have questions answered. Enjoy a treat. We’ll be done by 7 pm so you’ll have plenty of time to get home and get ready for the first day of school.
Our biggest retreat of the year is the Back to School Retreat. The retreat is August 18 to 19 and costs $75. We’ll look at Acts 2 and talk about what it means to move beyond our idea of community. Registrations are open now.
On August 26, we kick of Sunday Evening Youth Group. The Third Floor opens at 5:00 pm to hang out or play games. Our main programing begins at 5:30 pm with Worship on the Second Floor. Following worship, we’ll move upstairs for a time of games and a snack. Snack might be cookies, it might be fried cheese; whatever it is, it will be good and it will be free! After games, we’ll head into Groups. Most of the time Groups will be based on grade levels, but occasionally they will be mixed up or combined. Groups end at 7:30 pm and we all head home.
One of the biggest evolutions of our ministry is occurring in Mission Leadership Team. MLT has evolved into BEYOND. Beyond is a high-level, opt-in discipleship opportunity open to high school juniors and seniors. Over the course of seven meetings, students explore a curriculum focusing on the gifts and personality God has instilled in them and how to use those gifts and passions to develop opportunities for ministry. Students will be empowered to request grant money to make their ideas a reality. This evolution has been in the works for months and I’m really excited to see where it leads.
The first meeting of Beyond is September 16 at 4 pm. This meeting is mandatory for all students and at least one parent. We’ll go over the details, provide an opportunity to ask questions, and get ready for the year. We’ll also share a pot luck meal together. Registration for Beyond begins on August 1.
As we move into the new year, make sure you’re following us on Twitter and Facebook. Also, if you’re not connected to our Realm group, log on and search for “Youth Ministry Parents”. Finally, be sure you’re subscribed to our text message alerts. This will get you fully connected to everything going on in youth ministry.
